In Hong Kong, we are so engrossed with our own teaching and school duties that we do not often remember ourselves as members of a very big family - beyond our own school, beyond the Hong Kong city, beyond Asia - the world Lasallian family of over 6,000 brothers, 100,000 lay partners and 1,000,000 students. It is often when we join Lasallians from other Lasallian institutions that we get the pleasant reminder of our identify that we are Lasallians. One of these occasions was the Pacific Asia Regional Conference of Preparing Future Leaders for the Lasallian Mission, held in the first week of July 2009 at Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Amidst the commotion of the H1N1 ¡¥flu threat, the word ¡¥quarantine¡¦ came to our mind when we first learned that the participants would have to stay in the Phimna Centre for 10 days. But then we were also hopeful that this would offer a great opportunity for focused and fruitful learning at a quiet place. We were NOT to be disappointed at all.

The first day quickly passed through the warm hospitality of Bro. JJ Jimenez, Bro. Mark Murphy, and the staff of their Manila office.

On the second day, our course started with Bro. Mike Valenzuela¡¦s talk on power of a leader, using Hagberg¡¦s model and the life story of our founder St. De La Salle as examples. We learned that leaders would work effectively with INTERNAL power.

The following day Bro. Mike went on to explain the various dimensions of rubrics for Lasallian LEADERSHIP.These rubrics weredeveloped around the core values of Faith, Service and Community.

Bro. Ricky Laguda¡¦s module took place on the morning of the fourth day.Through a series of exercises, we found out our PERSONAL leadership styles and the pertaining strengths and weaknesses. In the afternoon, Eric Amaladas and Kenny Wong presented us the picture of multi-faith and multi-cultural setting and how the Lasallian mission emerged through DIVERSITY and harmony.

On the fifth day, Dr. Carmelita Quebengco explained to us the importance of recognizing and handling CHANGE.

On the sixth day, Bro. Ray Suplido guided us to discover the foundations of SPIRITUALITY, using the challenges St. De La Salle had faced at different stages of his life.

Naturally, any Lasallian programme would not be complete without EXPOSURE visits in which we exchanged ideas with teachers of the four Lasallian schools that we visited on the seventh day.We were all impressed with how students of these schools were shown to live out the spirit of service for the poor in various ways.

The eighth day was INTEGRATION day when Bro. John D¡¦Cruz helped us relate what we had learned to our project ¡V Introductory Lasallian Formation Programme for the Penang District. We pledged to prepare formation materials for students, teachers, parents and other stake holders in Hong Kong.

On the last night in Phinma Centre, we followed the good old tradition of having a farewell party. In the party, Bro. John sums up what we had been through very nicely with the word D-I-S-C-I-P-L-E ¡V an identity we all share as disciples of Jesus to spread the good news.

We have had a rewarding and gratifying experience, which made it difficult to bid farewell to the thirty five other participants from other places on the last day. However, we missed home too; with a lot of hugging, we said goodbyes and ¡§till we meet again¡¨.

It must be highlighted that we have learned so much from not only the speakers of the programmes but also participants from different sectors - their experience in education, their insights in the Lasallian mission, their prayers, and their versatility in organizing fun as well as meaningful games.

It is in the plan of the programme that the participants would all return to Phinma next July to report on the projects we have pledged to undertake. Thanks to Bro. John, mentor of our group, we have already agreed on a list of objectives and a schedule to complete our project by June 2010.

The teachers in our Lasallian schools gathered together for a Lasallian Staff Development Day on the 8th October, 2005. The venue was the splendidly appointed hall of La Salle Primary School.
We were indeed hououred and privilaged to have as our facilitator Brother Mark Murphy. Brother Mark placed great emphasis on our Lasallian core values in education. In particular he selected four of these:
      1. Develop Awareness / Intimacy with the Divine
      2. Form Community with others of a like mind
      3. Acquire Knowledge / Wisdom necessary to lead a good life
      4. Exercise Compassion / Response to the needs of others, especially the poor.
All participants including members of Lasallian Education Council, received a copy of our latest Hong Kong Lasallian publication entitled " Prayer Services and Reflections on the 12 Virtues of a Good Teacher".
