Dear Brothers, Family and Friends,
Prayerful greetings from Madurai. We have
finished our retreat and are back to our respective communities.
Again, we are most appreciative for all the notes and expressions
of concern as well as promise of prayers that all of you
have sent.
Here in India, the government seems to be doing
a good job of responding to the tragedy. They are getting immediate
relief material to those areas hardest hit. They also have tight
control over all these areas so as to prevent looting and the
spread of disease. Individuals and even organizations /NG0’s will
have to wait before it will become clear how to help in a more
long-term fashion.
Our Delegation has sent out teams of Brothers
and Lasallian Partners who are assessing what we might do as
the most appropriate response. Initially, it seems there will
be a large number of young children left as orphans and families
homeless. We can provide some temporary shelter and provide
care in our several hostels and then see what can be done more
long term. By January 6, we expect these teams to be back from
the areas and give us suggested actions.
The emotional impact on our Brothers as well
as the families of our Lasallian Partners has been a difficult
burden for them at this time of year. The Brothers in neighboring
countries, especially Sri Lanka ,tell us that they too were spared
any direct tragedies or even damage to property. But again, many
of their families and friends have been affected. We do what we
can by way of response and provide short term assistance if we
can. Prayer and sympathetic response are the best we can do for
now. Please join us in this effort by praying for them and perhaps
more practical responses as the weeks go on.
On the next page I have reprinted a poem-prayer written
by one of our Brothers during the retreat. Perhaps its recitation
will put you in real harmony with us and the people so tragically
impacted.
By next week, I should be more clear about
the ways in which we are going to respond. Know of our appreciation
for all your notes of concern and promise of prayers. I will
do what I can to keep you informed. Since I am leaving India
on Jan 8th to go to Myanmar and then Sri Lanka, I have put
your names on the mailing list that Brother John Fernando,
the President of the Delegation, sends to keep everyone updates.
Fraternally,
Brother Mark
