On the 5th of March 2022, Lasallians representing the different sectors of Hong Kong will be gathering to talk about their hopes and dreams for the Lasallian Mission in our sector.
As a backgrounder, it is the tradition of the La Salle Brothers as an international Religious Institute to hold an ordinary General Chapter every seven (7) years. “Constituted to represent the whole Institute, the General Chapter has been since the days of the Founder [St John Baptist de La Salle] the ultimate expression of the communion that exists among all the Brothers.” (Rule of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Art. 112a). It is held to evaluate and formulate directions for the worldwide Lasallian Mission and also to elect the Brother Superior General and the Brother Members of the General Council.
In more recent years, the Brothers have included the Lasallian partners to take part in the General Chapter by inviting them to share their experiences and views. This spirit of consultation and association is regarded as a part of our charisma as one Lasallian Family.
The next (46th) General Chapter is scheduled for May 2022 in Rome. After the 46th General Chapter, all Lasallian Districts are asked to hold their own local District Chapters. The Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD) is planning to hold its District Chapter in 2023. To this end, the LEAD District will organize the 3rd LEAD Mission Assembly in September 2022.
To prepare for this LEAD Mission Assembly, each country/sector of LEAD is invited to hold Country/Sector Conversations, involving both Brothers and Lasallian partners, to look at the local realities and make suggestions for the 3rd LEAD Mission Assembly. The first two LEAD Mission Assemblies were held in Manila in 2014 and 2018 respectively.
Here in Hong Kong, our Sector Conversation will be held in two parts: The first part will be held in the morning of 5th March 2022 from 9:00 AM – 12:45 PM online or in-person in La Salle College, Kowloon. The second part will be held online on Saturday 5th March 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
The 3rd LEAD Mission Assembly is scheduled for September 2022. In prevailing conditions, it is likely to be online.
The Assembly is an excellent opportunity to reflect on where we are at, evaluate and look forward to the future.
In order to play our part in this exercise, Br Dennis Magbanua set up an organizing team to prepare for a Hong Kong Sector Conversation. Participants would come from the various bodies associated with the Lasallian mission in Hong Kong namely, the Brothers, the Lasallian Education Council (LEC), the Principals Conference, the Lasallian Animation and Formation Team (LAFT), School Managers and Staff, the Alumni, and the Lasallian Youth.
After detailed preparations, the Conversation was held on 5th March with a pleasing turnout of more than 70 participants.
Brother Jeffrey Chan was the master of ceremonies. An appropriate opening prayer was led by our young Brothers. Brother Patrick Tierney followed with a summary of the propositions of the 2nd LEAD Mission Assembly and the appropriate progress made in Hong Kong. Brother Thomas Lavin then explained the aims of the group sharing and introduced the two questions to be addressed.
“How would you describe our existing Lasallian educational mission in Hong Kong in terms of its strengths and challenges?” and
“What dreams do you have for the Lasallian Mission in Hong Kong and what steps can be taken to achieve these dreams?”
The group sharing was seen to be the highlight of the event and it turned out to be so. The 8 group reports were delivered concisely and to the point. Brother Thomas made a synthesis of the reports and then we had our closing prayer.
The reports and synthesis will now be collated by the writing team and a final follow-up meeting will be held on the 2nd April. We hope to be in a position to submit a worthwhile report to the Brother Visitor and District Council, well in time for the LEAD District Mission Assembly and for the District Chapter.
Hong Kong Sector Conversation Part 2
The reports and synthesis were collated by the writing team and a final follow-up meeting was held on the 2 nd April. Again, there was a marvelous turnout and refinements made to the synthesis. We hope to be in a position to submit a worthwhile report to the Brother Visitor and District Council, well in time for the LEAD District Mission Assembly and for the District Chapter.
